Second-Hand Stress? Could Be Worse Than Second-Hand Smoke

More and more kids these days are having trouble regulating their own emotions, behavior, attention, and energy. And researchers in Western Australia believe it’s because the kids have too much stress in their lives. Actually, it’s not their stress. It’s the fallout from the stress their parents are experiencing—stress from dealing with economic problems, divorce and relationship issues, and more.

And when mom and dad are stressed, little Johnny and Janie get stressed too. According to researchers, second-hand stress can aggravate pre-existing conditions like autism, and increase a child’s risk of developing other severe medical and psychological issues, including obesity, heart disease, depression, and anxiety.

So if you’re feeling stressed, find some productive ways to deal with it—whether it’s yoga, meditation, marital counseling, or smacking softballs at the batting cages. It’ll be good for you and even better for your kids.

Whatcha think?
