Conspiracy Theories: Reptiles Run the World and Osama is Alive

Conspiracy theories have always been around and probably always will be, which is why the polls from Public Policy Polling are always so entertaining. This time they not only asked Americans about the latest controversial themes, but broke a number of the answers down by political party.

For example, overall, 37 percent of us believe that global warming is a hoax. But when you did a little deeper, Republicans are more than twice as likely as Democrats to agree (58 percent vs. 23 percent). And while 20 percent of Republicans believe Obama is the Anti-Christ, only 6 percent of Democrats and 13 percent of Independents agree.

Just as many Democrats as Republicans (27 percent vs 28 percent) believe the conspiracy theories that aliens exist, but Republicans outnumber Democrats in believing that aliens crash landed in Roswell, NM in 1947 and that the government covered it up (27 percent vs. 18 percent). And while people 18-29 are twice as likely to believe in aliens as those over 65 (44 percent vs 21 percent), the youngsters are only slightly more likely to believe in the Roswell cover-up (22 percent vs. 19). And speaking of cover-ups, 7% believe that the moon landings were faked–just a touch more than believe that Osama bin Laden is still alive (I admit it, I’m one of them).

Overall, 5 percent believe that Paul MaCartney actually died in a car crash in 1966 and was secretly replaced by a lookalike so The Beatles could continue. And, while 4 percent believe of Americans believe conspiracy theories about shape-shifting reptilian people controlling our world by taking on human form and gaining political power to manipulate our societies, three times as many (14 percent) believe in Sasquatch or Bigfoot.

These results were were drawn from a survey of 1,247 registered American voters (not all of whom believe in conspiracy theories) done between March 27th to 30th. Margin of error for the overall sample is +/-2.8%. You can download the complete survey here.
