PRLog (Press Release) – Mar 16, 2012 -
In its aim to address health disparities in metropolitan Atlanta, the Community Health and Men’s Promotional Summit (CHAMPS)—an Atlanta, GA-based nonprofit organization launched in 2004 by Dr. James K. Bennett—will host its 1st annual “Bowl with a Goal: Keep Men’s Health Out of the Gutter” on Friday, April 13th at 300 Atlanta to support men’s health promotion and prostate cancer awareness.

As one of CHAMPS’ key programs, prostate cancer screening and health education among African-American men remains a relatively large problem.  Prostate cancer, which disproportionately strikes African American men, has hit an all-time high in the African American community. Unfortunately the raw reality of this disease has not hit home enough for many to make a lifesaving choice.

The organization hopes to raise money to fund health promotion, education, awareness, and prostate cancer screening projects so that survival from Prostate Cancer and many other diseases will become a reality rather than a dream.

“We are extremely proud to be a part of this effort to tackle Prostate Cancer, which affects one in six men in the United States,” says Dr. James K. Bennet. “By hosting this event, our hope is to increase awareness about Prostate Cancer and improved access to Prostate Cancer screening in the Atlanta metropolitan area and beyond.

About CHAMPS

The Community Health and Men’s Promotion Summit (CHAMPS) is a nonprofit organization that works to raise awareness of the importance of early detection and prevention concerning health issues for men, especially prostate cancer. The organization’s goal is to encourage men to make healthy lifestyle choices, as well as, address their healthcare needs.  It exists to help eradicate lines that enable health disparities in this world to exist. Although it is a lofty goal they believe by providing this safety net it can pursue their mission on all fronts: education, awareness, and prevention. Their initial and primary focus is Georgia, a state that ranks 9th in Prostate Cancer death*, with plans to expand operations to other states.
